Boat anchors need to provide exceptional dependability in anchoring water craft to prevent drifting out of position and onto hazards such as shallow water and rocks. The most aggressive holding designs incorporate twin flukes which have sharp points to dig into the ocean or lake bottom. Another style is similar to the shape of a plough and incorporates a single sharp pointed triangular shaped wedge to penetrate the bottom surface. A mushroom shaped anchor is adequate for small crafts not exposed to strong currents and winds. Anchors are fabricated from steel and aluminum alloys. Some are coated with plastic or polymers for corrosion resistance and some are galvanized. Accessories for anchors include chain, coupling rings to connect chain to anchor rope, and anchor line. Using chain adjacent to the anchor provides increased holding power because the weight of the chain keeps the fluke angles reduced which results in better holding characteristics. Chain length depends on the size of the boat, but usually 4 to 10 feet is adequate.
