As in most marine applications there are specific designs of equipment for most every category. This is also true in oars and paddles. Oars designed for rescue craft on large ships and yachts are larger, heavier, and usually made of wood or aluminum. Paddles for smaller watercraft are usually made of wood and are fairly light and usually less than 8 feet in length.

Kayak paddles on the other hand are very light and incorporate a double paddle design. The double paddle design simply means that there is a paddle at each end of the shaft so the kayak boater can thrust forward in the water by dipping on either side of the kayak.Kayak paddles do not use oar locks.
